WHITE PAPER SUMMARY

The Future of Wireless Handheld Devices: On Demand Mobile Server Networks

Why Servers on Handheld Devices And Are We Ready?

This white paper addresses the need for placing an application server on a handheld device. It presents real-world examples for its application within emergency response field and retail inventory distribution.

The paper discusses past, present and future waves in technology: Wave One - an increase in function from simple I/O to complex distributed processing and from simple teletype to very heavy PC's; Wave Two - the introduction of servers between the backend processors and the end point devices (data servers, print servers WEB servers), resulting in server networks; and Wave Three - where mobile handheld devices become servers. Servers having full network participation and application management to join and form mobile server networks on demand.

Mike Huestis, author of The Future of Wireless Handheld Devices also discusses market, business and technology trends and its influence from human circumstances and behavior, and economics. He says, "the ground is fertile for wireless devices, specifically On-Demand Mobile Server Networks." Huestis explains how the wireless market will benefit from the next wave of consumer and business technology. According to Huestis, this will entail server technology on handheld device capable of message and service brokering, database hosting and transparent legacy access for selected data. This will eventually lead to lifting the responsibility for server based networking off the current carrier infrastructure and taking over many of its current functions. The first business applications will be niche applications that provide a competitive business edge. The first consumer based application will go beyond text messaging to passing data (live or static pictures, music, etc.) directly from device-to-device, without going through a central server.
